8 Best Beaches in South Carolina – Maps of the Top Family Locations Near Charleston, Savannah, Myrtle Beach & More in 2024

      Josh Patoka
      Best South Carolina Beaches

South Carolina offers some of the best beaches on the Atlantic Ocean. These locations have plenty of smooth sand, lengthy shorelines, and calm waves. They are also easy to access by car or plane and the weather is excellent for most of the year.

With 2,876 miles of coastal tideland, there are many beaches to relax at across the Palmetto State. The best location may decide what else you want to do during your visit, including squeezing in a visit to a historical city like Charleston or playing a round of golf.

Here are the best beaches in South Carolina to soak up the sun and relax on the soft white sand.

      When to Visit South Carolina

The best time for a South Carolina beach trip is from mid-May through Labor Day Weekend. Although these are also the busiest months as it’s prime beach season.

Late May and June tend to have mild weather with relatively low chances of rain and comfortable temperatures. July and August are also “safe” from all-day rainouts but it gets hot during the day and pop-up showers are common.

The best off-season months are April, May (before Memorial Day weekend), September, and early October. The daytime temperatures are still warm but not oppressively hot and humid as in summer or even at the best Florida beaches

However, you should keep an umbrella handy as it’s common to have heavy rainfall for most of the day. All-day rain forecasts are more likely in the fall during the height of the Atlantic hurricane season when tropical systems can bring several inches of rain during a single week even when there is no wind or damaged property.

The winter months are cold and the average daytime highs reach the low 60s at best. These months are the cheapest to visit and have the smallest crowds. In many situations, you have “snowbirds” staying for an extended period to avoid the crippling cold winters that are all too common in northern climates.

      1. Hilton Head Island

Hilton Head Island Beach South Carolina

      Photo: hiltonheadislandsc.gov

Hilton Head Island (HHI) is a popular destination for families, golfers, and beachgoers that want to avoid the state’s busier metro areas in Myrtle Beach and Charleston. The island’s developers have also been intentional about maintaining the natural habitat to avoid the all-too-common boardwalk tourist traps.

While you avoid the hustle and bustle of the big city, HHI has many stores, outlets, restaurants, and things to do during your stay. For example, there are miles of bike trails, multiple golf courses, and the option of going dolphin watching or on a dinner cruise.

There are 12 miles of public beaches dotting the island and even more miles of oceanfront resorts. It’s also common for guests and full-time residents to stay in gated communities (plantations) that offer vacation homes and condos with more privacy and smaller crowds.

Coligny Beach Park is Hilton Head’s best public beach for most as it’s within walking distance of several hotels and resorts. There are also many restaurants nearby plus family-friendly amenities.

Location: Hilton Head Island is the state’s southernmost beach destination and is miles away from the Georgia-South Carolina state line. You can see Georgia’s Tybee Island from the south end of the island.

      Closest Airports

      • Hilton Head Island Airport (HXD) – 3 miles away
      • Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV) – 30 to 40 miles away
      • Charleston International Airport (CHS) – 98 miles away

Flying into Savannah/Hilton Head Airport and renting a car is the best option. You can reach the island in approximately 45 minutes.

A small airport on the island (Hilton Head Island Airport — HXD) is primarily for charter flights. However, the legacy airlines have begun offering commercial flights year-round from nine airports which can be an excellent option during peak season when there are more flight options.

      Nearby Hotels

Beach House Hilton Head Resort – This beachfront resort is adjacent to Coligny Beach Park although you have private beach access. It’s also easy to walk to several of the island’s best restaurants and land activities. You can enjoy an on-site pool, restaurant, and an evening firepit. The rooms include a mini-fridge and it’s also possible to get bunk beds.

Inn and Club at Harbour Town – If you’re going to stay in a gated plantation, the Sea Pines Resort offers the most amenities. For instance, this community is home to the Harbour Town Lighthouse, the PGA Tour RBC Heritage golf tournament, horse stables, and miles of well-maintained bike trails. This hotel is located on the championship-level golf course and has rooms featuring custom furnishings and marble soaking tubs. This boutique hotel also offers 24-hour butler service and several on-site amenities.

      Other Recommended Hotels:

Why We Like Hilton Head Island

Hilton Head Island has many activities and modern conveniences, such as shops and restaurants to keep you busy when you’re not on the beach or golf course. While this is a popular tourist destination, it’s not a tourist trap or a party destination as it has a quieter atmosphere in contrast to the better-known Myrtle Beach. The Vacationer’s Josh Patoka regularly vacations at HHI and highly recommends it.

      2. Folly Beach

      Folly Beach South Carolina

The Charleston area has three nearby beaches with Folly Beach being approximately 30 minutes south of the Holy City. Your other options are the Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island. This public beach maintains an image of being an old-style beach town but it’s also known as a hippie hangout for its easy-come, easy-go atmosphere.

This beach spot also boasts one of South Carolina’s best surfing spots at “The Washout” and “The Pier.” Bear in mind that the waves are relatively calm and won’t compete with California or Hawaii. It can also be an enticing destination for families with older children plus college students.

There are approximately six miles of beach access with several hotels, inns, and vacation rentals to choose from along the ocean and throughout the cozy downtown. The public beach park has plenty of space to make a day in the ocean. Visitors may also appreciate walking out on the fishing pier.

Location: Folly Beach is 11 miles south of Charleston which is an approximate 24-minute drivetime.

The inn was recently remodeled but continues to offer a casual experience similar to the original Holliday family starting 80 years ago. Guests can also enjoy the island’s largest pool. While the property isn’t oceanfront, it’s only a one-minute walk and is only 1,000 feet away from the pier.

If you need a change of scenery, you can be in downtown Charleston within 30 minutes. Patriots Point, Sullivan’s Island, and Boone Hall Plantation are also close by. You may also be able to take a ferry to the ultra-private Dewees Island.

The Isle of Palms has plenty of public beach access and it’s easily accessible from Charleston. This destination is a good fit for travelers of all ages but especially families with young children.

While you can stay occupied with the beach and watersports by staying at a hotel or vacation rental, staying at the Wild Dunes Resort can provide more variety for travelers that like being active but don’t want to drive far to enjoy the amenities.

      4. Myrtle Beach

      Myrtle Beach South Carolina

      Photo: booking.com

Myrtle Beach is probably the best-known South Carolina beach as it has the most tourist activities and is the keystone of The Grand Strand which is a 60-mile stretch of beach communities. It can also be cheaper than other destinations which can be important to budget travelers.

While many beach snobs label Myrtle Beach as a “tourist trap,” it is the best South Carolina destination if you like experiences. For example, the 1.2-mile Oceanfront Boardwalk and Promenade has the iconic SkyWheel, amusement parks, water parks, and casino cruises.

Many oceanfront hotels make it easy to reach the beach, on-land attractions, and restaurants.

Location: Myrtle Beach is on South Carolina’s northern coast.

There are also many restaurants and attractions nearby within walking distance including the SkyWheel which is four blocks away.

      Other Recommended Hotels:

      Why We Like Myrtle Beach

Myrtle Beach easily offers the most things to do as you can enjoy the beach. Additionally, many other entertainment experiences are at most coastal and mountain tourist getaways, such as Branson, Missouri, or Tennesee’s Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg.

If you’re traveling on a budget, Myrtle can also be a tad cheaper than Charleston’s beaches, Hilton Head Island, or one of the private communities. Additionally, it can be quicker to drive to if you’re coming from Charlotte, NC, or other prominent mid-Atlantic cities.

      5. Kiawah Island

      Kiawah Island Beach South Carolina

      Photo: booking.com

Consider going to Kiawah Island if you want to stay on an upscale island with fine dining and several golf courses. For example, President Biden vacationed here in August 2022. Unlike other popular beach destinations, there are many permanent residents here.

This destination is better for couples and older travelers, although there are family-friendly activities too. This island has 10 miles of beaches but its only public beach access is at the Kiawah Beachwalker Park. So, it’s essential to find a place with easy accessibility to the ocean if you decide to stay here.

Villas and apartments are the most common accommodation for this island community. It’s possible to find lodging with one bedroom or multiple rooms if you’re bringing along several guests.

      Why We Like Kiawah Island

Kiawah is one of the best South Carolina private island communities as it has plenty of beach access and additional activities. Visitors also have plenty of dining options although shoppers will prefer a place like Hilton Head Island to partake in this particular endeavor.

You will like this destination if you want to avoid the crowds but you can still reach downtown Charleston within 45 minutes when you want to enjoy an urban environment.

Sullivan’s Island is the most private of Charleston’s three adjacent beach communities. This beach is a similar alternative to North Carolina’s Outer Banks as you can enjoy the experience of a small beach town but you can drive to historic Charleston in 15-20 minutes.

This island is also historically significant as it’s at the mouth of Charleston Harbor. A visit to the decommissioned Fort Moultrie is highly recommended as you can learn about the area’s history and explore how this outpost protected the city from the colonial days through World War II.

      The Vacationer’s Final Thoughts

South Carolina has three primary beach zones: Myrtle Beach, Charleston, and Hilton Head Island. Each has its unique traits and caters to a different traveler type.

Myrtle Beach is best for those that prefer the dazzling array of tourist attractions which tend to draw larger (and potentially rowdier) crowds. However, this area is usually more affordable.

The Charleston-area beaches (Folly, Isle of Palms, Sullivan’s) each have their own personality but are the easiest to reach if you’re visiting Charleston. The beaches have everything you need but you will need to go into town if you want to enjoy the nightlife or history.

Hilton Head Island balances hotels with public beach access and private communities with condos and apartments. The island is great for biking, golfing, and shopping when you’re not sunbathing or playing in the waves.
