Some offer more luxe hotels. All, though, provide a quick getaway accessible via a short flight from the U.S.

When to Go to Mexico

But before you can book that flight, think about the best time for you to go to Mexico. Weather, crowds, and hotel costs can all impact your stay.

For the best weather, avoid Mexico’s hurricane season, July–October. Aim to visit during the dry season, December to April. The wet season begins around May, a few months before hurricane season starts. 

In terms of weather, you only need to worry about rain and storms. The temps are pretty warm year-round. Even in so-called cold months like December and January, the temp can easily reach the 80s. 

As far as busy seasons go, if you’re looking to visit the Cancun area, try not to visit during spring break. March is spring break prime time. College kids flock to the region in the spring. This can mean higher hotel prices for you and, in general, an unpleasant stay if you don’t fall into that crowd. Additionally, overall, the resorts across Mexico are busy around the holidays, Christmas through New Year’s.

Your best bets? Travel to Mexico between hurricane season and the holidays. That means early November, or after the holidays and before the spring break crowds arrive, so January or February.

This 5-star hotel sits on Mexico’s west coast, on the Sea of Cortez. The luxe hotel has received rave reviews from a range of travel brands. It’s also been included on a lot of travel award lists. The amenities are broad. There’s something for everyone in the family to enjoy. The suites are expansive. Luxury is the name of the game here, for sure. Additionally, unlike many all-inclusive resorts that serve sub-standard food, reviewers say the resort’s seven restaurants all offer amazing dining experiences.  

Pros: Luxurious amenities abound. All of your basic activities are provided. There are children’s and teens’ activities, a spa, entertainment, and several pools.

Cons: The one amenity that this resort doesn’t have? A swimmable beach. If you’re looking to frolic in the ocean during your trip to Mexico, this is not the resort for you. 

Included: Enjoy all-day dining at seven restaurants, 24-hour room service, premium alcoholic beverages, a stocked fridge, tastings, and cooking classes. Other free resort activities include water sports, nightly entertainment, and children’s and teens’ activities. There are multiple three-tiered infinity pools, including a pool just for adults. 2. Royal Hideaway Playacar

If, though, you’d rather stay on the Caribbean side of Mexico, where the waters are a little more suited to swimming, check out Royal Hideaway Playacar. The AAA 4-Diamond property is adults-only and geared toward romance. There are just over 200 guest rooms and suites. All are situated amid beautiful gardens right on the beach. There are a lot of amenities at this property, but you get those amenities at a lower price point than you would at, say, Grand Velas Los Cabos. 

Pros: This luxury property is an adults-only, refined haven in the middle of Playa del Carmen. If you’re looking for luxury at a steal, this is where you’ll get it. 

Cons: Because the property is adults-only, it’s not a good fit for traveling families. Additionally, restaurants do require reservations. That can be annoying if you don’t want to plan. There’s also not a big nightlife scene at the resort. If you want to drink and dance into the wee hours of the morning, you can’t do it here.

Included: Guests enjoy access to six restaurants and six pools. You can get 24-hour room service. You also get premium drinks at three bars. Inclusions range from access to a fitness center and tennis courts to non-motorized water sports and games. The resort provides free WiFi and nightly entertainment. 

Audience: Adults only, looking for something luxurious and a romantic stay.

3. Hotel Xcaret Mexico

Hotel Xcaret Mexico sits between the Caribbean and the Mayan jungle. It offers a range of luxurious, stylish suites. A few include wall-to-wall water views, private pools, and/or private hot tubs. 

However, what makes this property stand apart is its All-Fun Inclusive concept. This allows guests to not only enjoy dining on the property for free but also airport transfers and transportation to nine Xcaret-owned attractions around the region. Attractions range from caving to zip-lining, jungle excursions to white-water rafting. 

Pros: Get access to a range of fun, regional activities, and excursions. It’s all a part of your room rate. Otherwise, enjoy a range of luxurious suites and dining. 

Cons: The focus is on the off-resort experiences, rather than the on-resort experience. So, you might not find as much fun while just staying at the property. Additionally, you do need to make reservations for the excursions. 

Included: Guests receive airport transfers. Food and beverages at 12 restaurants are likewise included. There’s also access to nine “parks” for excursions and activities. WiFi is free. Ferry service to Isla Mujeres is also free.

Audience: Adventure travelers, families, and those who want a packed vacation itinerary.

This adults-only resort sits in Cancun’s Hotel Zone. This means it’s right in the middle of all the action. If you want to be near tons of off-resort fun, including shopping, dining, and nightlife, this resort delivers. However, the 5-star property also offers plenty of luxurious experiences without ever leaving. There’s a huge spa, three pools, 24-hour room service, and nightly live music. Butler service is standard, as are special in-room extras like pillow menus. 

Pros: This property offers a great location and luxurious experiences on-resort, for the best of both worlds.

Cons: While the restaurants offer a nice mix of cuisine, there still are only five restaurants. Additionally, some suites have no water view. Some are also advertised as having a balcony, but the balconies do not offer enough space for sitting. 

Included: Guests enjoy dining at five restaurants, top-shelf beverages, 24-hour room service, and butler service. There’s also WiFi, and access to the spa’s hydrotherapy treatments. Unfortunately, transportation is not included.

If you’d rather be away from all the Cancun hubbub, you might want to consider Excellence Playa Mujeres. This adults-only, all-suite property sits within a luxury gated community. It’s exclusive, with the amenities to match. However, it’s worth noting that some of the VIP experiences are reserved for only those who upgrade their stays. But, if you’re fine with just enjoying the range of basic amenities (which are still great), you’ll find that staying slightly out of Cancun does come with a more affordable room rate. 

Pros: This resort is expansive, offering seven separate pools (including several that are heated). There are nearly 20 combined restaurants and bars. Reservations aren’t required at restaurants, which is a big plus. There’s also lots to do, even if you don’t want to pay extra for things like spa treatments, thanks to inclusions like cooking classes and scuba diving.

Cons: Unfortunately, what makes this property ideal to some makes it not-so-ideal to others. Getting out of Cancun means better room rates, fewer crowds, and less noise. However, it also means less to do, less-impressive beaches, and a lack of activity off-resort.

Included: Expect dining and premium drinks at nine restaurants and 11 bars. Enjoy seven swimming pools, free use of water sports equipment, and 24-hour room service. Free parking and free WiFi are also included.

The good news is, you have options like Moon Palace Cancun. This property has more than 2,000 guest rooms and tons of ways to have a great time. There are seven pools, more than a dozen restaurants, a golf course, and a separate kids’ area with a kid-friendly pool and playground. 

Best of all? It’s incredibly budget-friendly.

Pros: This family-friendly, budget-friendly property provides lots to do for every traveler — even those not traveling with children. 

Cons: There are two separate areas of the resort and, unless you specify at booking that you’d like to stay in one or the other, you may be just thrown in wherever the resort has availability. Additionally, the property is lacking in the luxury department. Rooms aren’t as upscale as what you’ll find at some other resorts. 

Included: Expect all-included dining and top-shelf drinks, WiFi, and 24-hour room service. There’s also access to non-motorized water sports, and access to all kids’ activities.

There is a non-inclusive option when booking, but you’ll want to go with the inclusive stay. 

Pros: This luxurious property offers Pacific Ocean swimming and an adults-only environment.

Cons: Hotel dining and amenities can add up if you don’t specifically book the all-inclusive package.
